What families ask us

What ages and hours do you serve?

We take children from 2 to 5 years old, in three rooms. Mornings run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and the school day ends at 3:00 p.m. The farmhouse doors open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 3:30 p.m.

How does a tour work?

A tour takes about an hour in the morning, while the rooms are working. You see all three rooms, the yard and the garden, and you can ask the guides anything. Children are welcome to come along.

What sets tuition?

The room, the days a week and the length of the day. We don't print figures here; they are on our enrollment page, and we go through them with you. The page called How tuition works explains each part.

How is a place held, and how does the waitlist work?

Your enrollment form and first month's payment hold a place. When a room is full, you can join its waitlist, and we offer places in the order families joined. We tell you where you stand.

Is Skein licensed?

Yes. Skein is licensed as a child care center by the Tennessee Department of Human Services. The license, the number of children each adult looks after and our safety routines are on the Safety page.

What happens when a child is ill?

A child with a fever or a contagious illness stays home. If a child becomes ill at school, we call you right away, and a guide stays with the child until you arrive.

What about photos?

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo.

What should my child bring?

A water bottle, a spare set of clothes in a labeled bag, and lunch on school days. Indoor shoes stay at school, and children wear shoes they can put on themselves.

What about toilet learning?

Children in the Porch room are still learning, and that is fine. Bring spare clothes, and the guides help each child at their own pace and talk with you about how it is going at home. From the Parlor on, we ask children to use the toilet on their own, with help when they need it.

How do you handle a hard day?

Every child has hard days. A guide stays close, says in plain words what is happening, and offers a quiet place and something to do with the hands. At pickup we tell you what we saw, and we ask what you see at home.

Still have a question?

Call the school or send a message, and we reply within one working day.
